WASHINGTON JAZZ™ APPLES SYNC UP WITH CONSUMERS
November 5, 2008
Seattle, WA. -- As consumers sink their teeth into ENZA JAZZ™ apples this winter, they will also have the chance to sync their iPods to their favorite new tunes -- and more.
Specially marked boxes of JAZZ™ apples will contain codes that can be entered on www.jazzapple.com for a chance to instantly win one of 75 musical prizes, according to David Nelley, pipfruit category director for The Oppenheimer Group. Oppenheimer is the exclusive North American marketer of JAZZ™ apples, which are licensed by the company’s partner, ENZA, of New Zealand.
“We’re bringing back our popular three-pound ‘fridge’ pack, with the added bonus of the JAZZ™ Apples Unplugged Sweepstakes,” he said.
Prizes include 8 GB iPod nano and 8 GB iPod touch players, as well as iTunes cards. The contest runs from November 1, 2008 through March 1, 2009.
Washington JAZZ™ shipments began the first week in November.
“We have had some very nice fall temperatures. It has been good ‘coloring’ weather,” Nelley said. “The fruit finish is excellent.”
Nelley anticipates that the JAZZ™ volume will be down slightly from last year. JAZZ™ is a naturally small apple, that presents value to shoppers looking for more fruit servings for their money, he continued. “The three-pound fridge pack delivers great-eating, premium apples in a size that is well-suited to lunch boxes or after-school snacks. By putting the pack right in the refrigerator, families can assure the apples are easily accessible and always crisp.”
JAZZ™ apples will also be available in three-pound mesh and poly bags this season.
The same weather that has toned up JAZZ™ as harvest approached has also had a positive impact on the fruit finish of its Washington-grown Pacific Rose™.
“The fruit is beautiful this season with exceptional color,” Nelley said. Pacific Rose will begin shipping two weeks later than JAZZ™ and is also reduced slightly in volume from 2007. “This is a late season variety and is really benefiting from the nice weather this late in the apple harvest.” This sweet, crisp apple, which historically sizes on the larger side, is anticipated to peak in a much more manageable size 72.
“Both Pacific Rose and JAZZ™ are eagerly anticipated by retailers and consumers, given the way the import crop was in such short supply,” Nelley said. “The ‘managed’ approach to these varieties assures that our customers enjoy the same terrific eating experience regardless of where the apples are grown. This consistency is a unique benefit.”
Oppenheimer now offers both varieties almost 12 months per year, with crops from New Zealand and Washington dovetailing for steady supply. To add support to its marketing program, Oppenheimer has appointed senior sales representative Charlie Hein to help manage the deal. Hein joined Oppenheimer last May.
